a greater challenge for Modi than anticipated the polls show as rival parties seize on discontent caused by a slowing economy Gujarat is where Modi earned his spurs as a business-friendly chief minister who cut red tape and graft and turned it into an economic powerhouse But an unpopular national tax and a shock move last year to withdraw most currency in a fight against graft has hurt Gujarat like the rest of the country and its businessmen are making loud complaints Three big polls carried out in the run-up to the vote on Saturday and next week have predicted a victory for Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but with a greatly reduced majority An ABP-CDS poll this week gave the BJP 91-99 seats in the 182-member state house and the main opposition Congress 78-86 suggesting a close fight To win a party needs 92 seats The surveys have often gone wrong though and Modi himself remains far more popular across the country than his rivals including Rahul Gandhi who Masti or a Kya Kool… flick that comes calling (and does well too) However by and large Hindi film industry has played safe as far as credible names coming together to explore some fun element a la ‘American Pie’ style Moreover in the current times when Censor Board is showing its teeth like never before even the handful of sex comedies could well be wondering around the eventual content that would be permitted to be unveiled on screen Here is looking at some upcoming sex comedies in Bollywood 1 ‘Mastizaade’ The man behind many a pun Milap Zaveri has taken an unabashed route by promising to unleash some more ‘masti’ for the audience He goes full frontal with Sunny Leone (pun truly intended) and brings in partners-in-crime Tusshar Kapoor and Vir Das for his sex comedy ‘Mastizaade’ There was much hype generated for the film right through its shooting Current state: Awaiting Censor Board certificate 2 ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum 3’ There was considerable gap between ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum’ and ‘Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum’ Now for third in the series while Tusshar Kapoor stays on Riteish Deshmukh has moved on as he wishes to take a break from sex comedies Aftab Shivdasani has stepped in instead Not much has been heard about it for a while now considering current embargo on anything around sex Let’s see if this sex comedy prevails Current state: The film was originally slated for exception to step into this sex comedy franchise Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani have continued without any apprehensions whatsoever Current state: Shooting is on in full swing Slated for November The Sudanese Civil War ended in 2005 However the province of Abyei has often been at the centre of intense fighting The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague has reached a decision upon its status and analysts fear a resumption in fighting Alia Allana explains: •n What is the dispute in Abyei The dispute centres over the rich oil fields in the central province of Sudan Both the Muslim North and Christian South claim rights over the territory The Comprehensive Peace Agreement that brought an end to the civil war did not finalise conditions over Abyei The matter was thus handed over to the PCA in The Hague •n Who claims what The North claims that Abyei town itselfand the land south of itis within the territorial boundary of the government in Khartoum Howeverthe South claims that majority of the land including the oil fields and grazing land are a part of its territory The Court has granted the North control over the Heglig oilfields and the Nile oil pipelineangering the South n Some in the South have called for the resignation of the Southern Sudan government Is this likely The Government of South Sudan (GoSS) has attempted to calm the people of the South through focusing on the grey areas of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement Technicallythe oilfields do not belong to Abyei anyway The Heglig oilfield belongs to the Unity State and will fall within the jurisdiction of the South when a decision is reached following 2011s referendum •n What does the common man lose Abyei is more than a mere oil dispute Granted the country profits from annual oil revenues of $500 millionthe nomadic tribes of Dinka and Misseriya rely upon the land for their livelihood The catch is that the Misseriya are technically of Northern Sudan and thus are not defined as residents of Abyei Hostility from the Dinkas will deny the Misseriya the right to graze cattle and move across the territory •n There is fear of renewed fighting What has been the past history Despite the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the case at The Hagueclashes in 2008 resulted in 100000 displaced people There have been reports of Southern troops amassing on the borderand analysts fear that this decision may tip the balance The matter is further complicated due to the indictment of Khartoums dictator Omar Al-Bashir His government in the past has tried to re-arrange the North-South border and the policy still operates •n What next The decision on Abyei will take place in a referendum to be held in 2011 This decision will allow the people to decide whether they want to be a part of the North or the South Many believe Abyei will want to join with the South There will be another referendum at the same time: this one decides the fate of Sudan as the South decides on appear before the country’s top anti-graft body which is to interrogate them over the money laundering and corruption charges revealed by the Panama Papers The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had issued summons to Sharif and his sons —Hussain and Hasan daughter Maryam son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar and finance minister Ishaq Dar — to interrogate them in its Lahore office in connection with their offshore properties revealed by the Panama Papers case The watchdog irked over the Sharif family’s non-cooperation was considering writing to the interior ministry to place their names on the Exist Control List (ECL) stopping them from leaving the country File image of Maryam Sharif Twitter @MaryamNSharif A senior NAB official told PTI that Sharif his sons daughter son-in-law and the finance minister were summoned to appear before the NAB but none of them turned up He said Sharif and his two sons failed to appear before the NAB for the third consecutive time while Maryam and Dar for the second and first time respectively The official further said the NAB would write to interior ministry to put Sharif and his family on ECL if they continued to evade the investigation Sharif his children and his son-in-law were summoned in a case that primarily revolves around Maryam being a beneficiary of offshore firms Dar was summoned for exorbitant increase in his assets from 2008 to 2009 which was pointed out in the report of Joint Investigation Team constituted by the Supreme Court to investigate the Panama Papers case Earlier Sharif and his sons were summoned on Friday in a separate case involving graft and money laundering charges but they did not appear before the NAB On last Sunday Sharif his sons daughter and son-in-law failed to appear before it Sharif in a letter to NAB has said he would join its investigation after a decision by the Supreme Court on his review petition against its July 28 verdict which disqualified him from the office of the prime minister "My family members and I will join the NAB investigation once the Supreme Court decides my review petition against my disqualification" Sharif had said in the letter On 28 July a five-member Supreme Court bench disqualified Sharif from continuing in his office for possessing a work permit at the firm of his son in the UAE Sharif has also sought a stay from the Supreme Court on the further implementation of the judgement till a decision on the review petition is taken The apex court is likely to take up Sharif’s review petition early next month after the vacation of judges Dar also wrote to NAB that he would join the NAB investigation once the Supreme Court decides his review petition against its verdict to file a reference against him According to the JIT Dar invested 55 million pounds ($704 million) in Baraq Holdings in the UAE but source of these funds were not disclosed Similarly the JIT said that Maryam was found to be the beneficial owner of Avenfield Properties as well as offshore companies of Nescoll and Nielsen The JIT report has also charged Maryam for submitting fake/falsified documents to it which is a criminal offence At some point during Delhi Daredevils’ hapless loss against Mumbai Indians commentator Mike Hussey interviewed their coach/mentor Rahul Dravid It was a wonderful television sight as one legendary former cricketer interviewed another The devil though pun unintended was in the detail Two comments from Dravid stood out “It is a great learning experience for these kids facing tough situations and playing in front of great crowds When they go on to play for India they will not feel the pressure” he said first Then Hussey asked Dravid about his coaching style given he has been around this young bunch of players – currently known as Daredevils’ failing batting line-up – for some time now “My style is not to change players too much not to mess up their thinking” Dravid replied hinting at his great learning in seeing Greg Chappell in action a long time ago Kagiso Rabada’s all-round efforts went in vain as Delhi Daredevils capitulated to a defeat against MI SportzPics/IPL Obviously it is the right thing to do as coach The best you can do is put your arm around them especially the youngsters when things are going wrong and talk to them about what they could have done differently Given Dravid’s demeanour there would have been plenty of ‘putting arm on shoulder’ and ‘talking’ in that Delhi Daredevils’ dressing room this past week thanks to their disappointing losses against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad There are times however when the coach/mentor needs to fling his cap in disgust Yes Dravid has been known to do that too when with Rajasthan Royals and Delhi’s loss at the Wankhede on Saturday night warranted another such candid moment Make no mistake about it this young batting line-up comprising of the likes of Sanju Samson Karun Nair Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer – all seen as the future Indian batsmen – showed why they aren’t simply ready yet They are not the finished product not enough to be wearing that blue jersey regularly just yet Samson played too early and failed to check his shot enough holing out to mid-off Iyer could have left the ball for wide but instead ended up edging behind as he sought to go for fine flick Nair played on as his luck just isn’t turning So much has been written already about his poor run that shows no sign of abating Then there is Pant Not a day passes when there isn’t social media chatter about his chances of making the Champions Trophy squad On evidence of his three-ball duck at the Wankhede he didn’t get his feet going against the moving ball and didn’t adjust enough for the movement Playing in England is a bridge too far for him as it isn’t a walk in any IPL park The bottom-line here is simple enough The Daredevils went from 1/1 to 24/6 in the space of 63 overs At no stage through that staggering collapse was the 143-run target too daunting All it needed was some patience and time at the crease enough to see out the opening bowlers and stemming the fall of wickets It needed those youngsters to farm the strike ignore the asking rate and get a partnership going – basically fulfill the responsibility that has been thrust on their shoulders At no point did any of them put his hand up If Dravid wants them to learn from their tough experiences going on their performance in the last three games it will not be a steep rather a stretched-out lengthy curve Meanwhile that partnership did come with Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris attempting the impossible 24/6 is a point of no return in T20 cricket and props to the South African duo for keeping Mumbai honest This isn’t about that consolation partnership though This is about changes the Daredevils made to their side and why they were good and not so good Let us start with that latter first Aditya Tare came in for Sam Billings who has scores of 25 24 55 21 and 13 so far but more importantly he put up decent opening stands with Samson There was an understanding developing between the two which the Daredevils sold off in hope for an inspiring performance from Tare against his old team T20 cricket doesn’t work on such whims and fancies The other aspect of Tare’s inclusion was bringing in Rabada Ever since the players’ auction there was this suspicion that the Daredevils would struggle to find an optimal combination with four overseas picks Despite the absence of Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy this game at the Wankhede was when that rankling doubt came to fruit Corey Anderson was fit again so they had to make room for him Chris Morris is near non-droppable even if they didn’t give him any deliveries to bat in the previous game The only option was between Billings and Pat Cummins They went in with the latter and while it worked in the first half of the game it backfired in the second half Let it be said here that the Daredevils’ bowlers put in a spirited performance after their poor showing against Kolkata and Hyderabad Let it be said that Amit Mishra once again looked like the most successful spinner in IPL history Let it be said that this pace attack – with the experience of Zaheer Khan and the pace of Cummins and Rabada – looks the most threatening in the current tournament Let it be said here that this was a complete bowling performance perhaps the best we have seen or will see this season or indeed in the recently past IPL seasons Rabada’s inclusion was an inspired one On a day when MS Dhoni took Rising Pune Supergiant to victory in proper Dhoni-esque fashion it needs to be remembered that young Rabada had shackled him back in 2015 It was perhaps the first time a bowler had enjoyed such success against the greatest finisher this game has ever seen Since then Rabada has only gone from strength to strength and his performance against Mumbai Indians was evidence of why he is thought to be Dale Steyn’s apt successor Simply put then Rabada put in a sterling performance – with both bat and ball – and in T20 cricket such a showing is worthy of a match win That the Daredevils couldn’t return victory for his efforts is a proper reflection of their fall from grace this week They were placed at 4 points from 3 matches seven days ago and now are placed at 4 points from 6 matches Time is starting to run out if the Daredevils want to find some noteworthy solution to this free-fall India’s hockey heroes kept the flag flying on a dismal day for cricket Somewhere the ammo in the Indian arsenal was damp and misfired From the moment Jasprit Bumrah let Fakhar Zaman’s catch by MS Dhoni get disallowed on a no-ball the cake began to crumble It had to happen one day and our winning streak in the Champion’s Trophy is over We are good to go We won it last time and we are runners-up this time around four years later It’s okay we just didn’t look a happy bunch Perhaps what’s good at Cardiff and Edgbaston doesn’t work at The Oval and after winning the toss maybe we should have batted But that is hindsight and it does not count Srikanth Kidambi won the Indonesia Open and Indian hockey team defeated Pakistan AP Fans always want to win and if we cannot win we want to end with grace and dignity and go down fighting It’s a nice noble King Arthur and the Round Table thought but sometimes it has a broken wing and doesn’t fly Our cricket had a broken wing this afternoon and we have to accept that and find comfort in knowing we have sipped the chalice of victory very often It does not matter who we lost to and it is not a bleak or dark day for Indian sport Our hockey team took Pakistan to the cleaners with a 7-1 victory in the Hockey World League Semi-Finals in London at the same time and that team had more of the possession So it happens Akashdeep Singh Harmanpreet Singh and Talwinder Singh thanks for the silver lining But in all the barrage of criticism that the Indian cricketers will face for their abject capitulation what will be forgotten is the victory at the Indonesia Open by Kidambi Srikanth who won in straight games over Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai 21-11 21-19 Good for you sir and terribly sorry it happened on this day when India’s cricket frenzy lost its wheel You filled us with pride watching you live on YouTube Okay I am no pundit but what went wrong on a dead pitch Did we just lose our stamina chasing the leather for that prodigious score put up by Pakistan Rohit Sharma looked half asleep Virat Kohli seemed to wish he was elsewhere and having been dropped gave it another swipe Zip The rest followed in a submissive line and by the time Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya were dismissed Rameez Raja was happily commenting on the Indians in the stands leaving the stadium Leave the boys alone We won one sport lost another Don’t heap too much scorn this was always on the cards and we are still the best batting team in the world And we do have the bottle We have come back from the edge very often and we will again This is just one of those things and not an indictment of our capability In fact a kick in the backside every now and then is a healthy awakening towards reality and I would have been a lot sadder if I hadn’t watched our boys in blue play surgical hockey like we once did and seen them hit a lucky seven So frankly thanks Kohli and Co for a great tournament and a splendid showing I think if you give away 338 runs you know you are on the receiving end and it is not your day in the sun You lost a game but not your standing a people-centric government does not
